When the southern portion of the Empire of Ulrik seceded (five hundred years before the birth of Rick Rivoire) --- splitting the Empire of Ulrik into the Empire of William (north) and the Realm of Catherine (south) --- the nobility of the Realm decided to devise a new calendar. The Empire kept a twelve-month calendar which it still uses, with one month for each of the twelve deities of the Divine Wheel.
The world of Raingun has a planetary day and year very close to those of Earth. The decisive battles between The Order of the Golden Gauntlet, and its undead foes on the Dark March, took nineteen days; eerily, so did Seven Badgers' closing of the Rift With No Bottom. Given this significance of the number 19, and that its square is so close to the number of days in the year, this new “Royal Calendar” has 19 days of 19 months, with a four-day “Festival of Gifts” in the middle of the year. Babies are officially named on 1 Titles (the first day of the Month of Titles).
